What's wrong with boys ??

There are still 101 children aged over six listed on Reece's Rainbow who have less than $50 in their grants.  That's101 too many. Can you guess how many are boys, and how many are girls ?  You'd think it would be about half and half, wouldn't you ? Well, you'd be wrong. By a long shot. 

Out of 101 children with less than $50 in their grant, 66 are boys, 35 are girls. Almost twice as many boys as girls. Why ? 

What's wrong with boys ?  Personally, I've always preferred boys. 

When I was eleven, and my mum was pregnant with her third baby, I SO wanted a brother (I already had an older sister). No, she was a sister. 

I was so sad, at the time.

As an adult, I have worked with many many many children of all ages, shapes and sizes - and I'll be the first to admit that most of my favorite kids have been boys. I have no idea why - but, I was a tom boy growing up, so I guess it's just the way I am. Thankfully, my one and only child is a boy - I'm sure I would have been just fine if he'd been a girl, but I'm happy with him just the way he is :)

Here's another statistic for you.  Out of the 66 boys with less than $50 in their grants, MORE THAN HALF are in the "Other Angels" categories. 

There are almost as many "Other Angel" boys as there are girls from all categories.

Do you know what's really sad ? 

Only about 4 of those 34 have a "Guardian Angel". 

Please - if you are not able to donate at this time - consider signing up to be a Guardian Angel for one of these boys !!  

I am actually Guardian Angel to a younger child - goes against the grain, I know, but read HERE to find out why I am advocating for Neville.

As well as preferring boys over girls, I have also always preferred working with "Other Angels" over the years. Many moons ago I worked for several summers at a summer camp for children with special needs. We had children with every disability imaginable, including, of course, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy etc etc. I much preferred the kids with cerebral palsy, and those who were more severely affected by their disability. The more "needs" they had, the harder I fell for them.  I was reminded today of one little boy who only came to camp once - his family were originally from Russia. When I worked with him, I had no clue about the way disabled people are treated in other parts of the world. Looking back, I now realise how lucky that little boy was that his family were able to move over here. He's the one in the wheelchair. The boy on the right - his family escaped from Romania. Another lucky boy. 

That's me in the middle. I don't look like that any more - this was almost 20 years ago - wonder where they are now ??

So - 34 Other Angel Boys. What can we do about it ? 
Well, we could adopt them.
We could pray for them.
We could be their Guardian Angel.
We could share share share.We could donate.

Orphanage 1

"Orphanage 1" is an institution where orphans with both mental and physical disabilities are sent when they "age-out" of the baby houses. The kids are malnourished, are very small for their age, and are severely delayed.

"Orphanage 1" is the last stop for these kids—there is no way out, other than for a few who are chose for adoption.

All of the children below have been transferred to "Orphanage 1", and will live the rest of their lives there, unless they are one of the lucky ones, and find a family. They have next to no chance of this happening with the amounts they currently have in their grants. Families who CAN afford to house, feed, cloth and educate their children do not usually have the $30,000 or more needed to finance an adoption in their back pocket. These children need ALL the help they can get. Money is not going to magically appear in their grants - one of US - one of YOU - one of your friends - have to be the ones to help them. We cannot just turn our backs on them, and figure someone else will donate. We CAN afford a few dollars, no matter how much we THINK we can't, we CAN.

Look at the children. 

Look into their eyes.

 Help them.

 You know he is the one, when you walk into the building, he runs to greet you and takes you for a tour of the place.     Andrew is medically healthy, but shows many of the facial characteristics of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).    He is cognitively delayed, but active and friendly, with great potential in a family environment.

One hundred and one...

We have had a great week, with several children jumping the $50 wall, and one being found !!  Go HERE to read all about Joey, who will be Valentin's brother !!  Congratulations to the Ashton family !! :)

Unfortunately, there are still 101 children aged over 6 with less than $50 in their grants.  This includes SEVEN newly listed children who have a big, fat ZERO.  Also, three children with less than $20.  PLEASE help - I started this blog last fall, to ensure that NO child was seen as a zero - and we succeeded. Sad fact is - there are always more children that become available for adoption, and they all have to start somewhere - and that somewhere starts with z for zero.  Please, let's rally around and get rid of all these zeros, before more arrive and we become totally overwhelmed !

This curly hair boy was born on 5/2005. He is of Hispanic-African descent. Dark skin and dark curly hair, with big brown eyes and a fabulous smile! He likes to play kickball. He enjoys exploring the outdoors. He likes to stack blocks. When he’s successful, he will clap his hands. He can turn the pages of books. He communicates through gestures. He will often bring his caregiver over to something to show his wants or needs. He understands simple instructions. This darling boy waits for his own wonderful family because he has Down Syndrome. We previously had this darling child listed through a different agency, but he is available again now and hope we can find a family for him soon!

I decided to make a complete list of the children who still need to get over the $50 wall. If you scroll to the bottom you will see that some are oh so close. However, as you can see, there are 6 newly listed children at the top who have $0, as well as 3 who have less than $20, our last goal :( 

 If you can see your way to helping them out, that would be great !!

By the way - I have spent quite some time trying to get all the text to be the same color, but blogger seems to have it's own ideas, so I'm afraid there's no sense to the colors of the names !

All the names should be linked to that child's Reece's Rainbow profile, so feel free to click on their names and so find their donate button !  I chose not to use their pictures for this post. Firstly, because there are so many ! Secondly - so you can, if you wish, choose to donate to a child without seeing what they look like. Those kids without photos are at such a disadvantage - as are the children who had a bad picture taken, through no fault of their own.

Our goal is to get ALL of these children at least $50 in their grants

107 still with less than $50 - sadly, Parker, Anderson and Sealey are still where they were this time last week. It drives me crazy when I see newly listed kids get donations, but no-one deems these boys worthy. Of course - ALL the kids need all the donations they can get, but these older kids get passed over again and again. And again - through no fault of their own.

Here are 5 more - older boys, all with Down Syndrome - who have been listed for a long time, but never get so much as a second look. I realise they don't have the best pictures, but surely that shouldn't matter. It's so easy to see a cute baby or toddler and rush to donate to them, or a child who is obviously malnourished and sick - but these boys deserve a family just as much as them.

The intellect of the child is with deficit corresponding to the diagnosis of Down Syndrome. He shows attachment, joy, anxiety and guilt. He is calm and observes the play of the other children. He plays with them and enjoys contacts with them. He carries out simple orders come here, give me your hand, and sit down. The child doesn’t have skills to serve himself built up, needs constant support. He can eat independently. He can’t put his clothes on and take them off on his own but cooperates when changed. He reacts to his name. He orientates in the daily routine. He doesn’t signal his physiological needs. The child understands the speech of the others when expressed elementary. He carries out orders and verbal commands. He pronounces single words by imitating. He is communicative, seeks contacts, and shows preferences in the interactions with the other children and the personnel. He has expressive mimics by which shows his emotions and attitudes. The child likes to listen to songs, laughs loud and claps with his hands. He moves in time with the music and is very lively and energetic. He attracts the attention of the adults by pulling them or patting them with his little hand because he can’t speak. He pronounces separate syllables: ma, ba, da as well as words from repetitive syllables: mama, baba.

His attention is unstable, his memory is mechanic. He gives his hand for a greeting. He walks independently and has good general motorics. The fine motorics are limited. In emotional aspect the child is calm and quiet. He rejoices at the attention he is paid but prefers to play alone. He likes to play with toys by turning them from all sides. He looks at his hands with a great deal of interest and entertains himself by making different movements with them. The child is taken care of entirely by the personnel. The child is included in the project Granny and grandchild and learns how to eat independently. A speech therapist works with the child in order to develop his speech skills. The training how to eat on himself continues.

All it would take to make those kids look a little more worthwhile - $163.50
