TOO many zeros at Reece's Rainbow

Today, there were a whole bunch of new children listed as available for adoption on Reece's Rainbow - children who live in orphanages and institutions - children with various special needs - children who need a family to step up and claim them as THEIR child.

Thanks to Michelle at Reece's Rainbow, none of the children have ZERO in their grant !!  Michelle asked advocates to suggest names for the children - names that they will be known by on Reece's Rainbow, in order to keep their real names private.  If a person wanted to name a child, they were asked to put a little into their grant - to zero their zero !! What a genius idea !!!  As a result, 19 children who could have been zeros are NOT !!!

This just makes my heart sing !!!

You can go HERE to see all the very newly listed children !!
Some of them have very sad pictures - older children who need, so very much, the love of a family to help them thrive. They live, mostly, in institutions, where, although the staff may care about them, there are just too many children, and not enough staff, to care for them as they should be cared for. That is why they are listed on Reece's Rainbow - so they can find a family - find love - get medical attention - therapy - education - and did I mention - love ??

Unfortunately - the children listed below were already listed, and still have ZERO in their grants.

Clara - $0 $11.70
Manny - $0
Ezra - $0
Emily - $0
Erin - $0 $45
Dean - $0
Dani - $0
Lyle - $0
Zeke - $0
Jasper - $0
Fynn - $0
Flynn - $0
Garrett - $0
Sammy - $0

Can you help ?

14 children who have not yet ben noticed - still waiting for someone to see them, and say NO MORE - someone to see their worth and help get rid of their nasty zero. These children are worth SO much more than zero - please - show them - show the world - show me - that YOU think they have some worth ??

I thank you !

New Hope for Reece's Rainbow

So - firstly - I need to apologise for not posting in forever !! I have been promising a new post for ages, just haven't seemed to be able to find the time - or, more to the point - the words.

I HAVE been updating the grant totals 2 or 3 times a week, though - have you seen ?  There have been HUGE leaps in so many of the grants - some of those children who had less than $100 at the end of the January now have hundreds and even thousands now !!

There are a couple of reasons the grants have grown.  Firstly, there is a wonderful organization called Sevenly - who you can find at www.sevenly.org. They sell t-shirts - and more - and each week, part of the proceeds from their sales go to the cause of the week. The t-shirts are designed specifically for the cause they are raising money for - and during Reece's Rainbow week, many older children with Down Syndrome received $1000 from the Sevenly campaign !!

The reason for the HUGE leaps in some grants is bittersweet.  You probably heard that, for reasons I will not go into here, Russia recently decided to no longer allow Americans to adopt from their country.  I don't know the exact number, but I do know that there are many many children listed on Reece's Rainbow.  The adoption ban was first known about at the very beginning of the year - but there was hope, for a while, that they may still allow adoptions of children with special needs. Unfortunately, however, it seems that even that hope has now faded, and even the children with families who had already traveled to meet them are no longer adoptable.  Obviously, this is an absolute tragedy for those children and families, and my heart goes out to them. Some families are still fighting, some have chosen to adopt from a different country (yet still ready to go back and adopt their Russian child when/if possible) and some, I am sure, are still in limbo.

In the meantime - Reece's Rainbow had to make the heartbreaking decision of transferring all of the grant money from the Russian children, to those children in other countries who are still currently available for adoption.  Some of the children had hundred and thousands of dollars in their grants - and the ladies at Reece's Rainbow have had the task of re-gifting the money, sharing it as best as they could among the other children.  They also allowed people who had advocated and raised money for specific children to choose who would be the recipient of "their" child's grants. This was an absolutely wonderful thing for them to do - and it did, in a way, help ease the pain of seeing the Russian children become unavailable.

You may remember this

As part of the Reece's Rainbow Angel Tree fundraiser last Christmas, I pledged to raise $1000 for "Buddy", a young man with Down Syndrome (you can see Nathaniel holding his photo).  He's the one we shaved our heads for when we reached our goal !!  Unfortunately, Buddy is one of the children who is now unavailable for adoption because of the Russian ban.  I was blessed to be able to choose the recipient of his grant money - and I chose "Adam", another boy with Down Syndrome who lives in an orphanage in a different Eastern European country.

Adam

You may also remember "Neville" from this post.

I was Neville's Guardian Angel - meaning I had pledged to raise his grant, and advocate for him, until a family found him and brought him home. Sadly,Neville is also now unavailable for adoption - and, again, I was able to re-gift his grant to another child who IS still available. I chose Ernie because he was born in December 2010, just like Neville - and he also has the same diagnosis - hydrocephaly.

Ernie

SO many children have received "New Hope" grants from those who we can no longer help - and while it is truly heartbreaking to think about the Russian children - we still need to advocate and find homes for those who we CAN help.  As I can no longer raise money for Neville, I have decided to be Guardian Angel for another child. This time, picking a child was a much harder decision, as I wanted to choose an older child who still had less than $100 in their grant.  After MUCH thought, I chose "Sealey"

Sealey lives in an orphanage in Eastern Europe - he has cerebral palsy - and is about 81/2 years old.  When this picture was taken, he was almost 6 years old.  He is obviously tiny - sitting in an infant carrier, and placed in a crib.  He was probably just put in the seat for the picture - I have no doubt that he spends his days laying in the crib doing nothing.  My goal for Sealey is to raise his grant, and help find him a family - so that he can spend his life surrounded by love, rather than the wooden slats of a crib. Can you help ??  Click on his name, read his profile - share him - donate !!

Now - to get back to our regularly scheduled programming - as you know, the aim of this blog is to raise awareness of those older children listed on Reece's Rainbow who have less than $100 in their grants.

Since January 26th this year, EIGHTY-THREE children who had less than $100 in their grants have leaped the $100 Wall - thanks to the Sevenly campaign, the New Hope grants, and generous donors !!!!!

Also - FIFTEEN children who had less than $100 in their grants in January have now found their families - they have families working, as we speak, to bring them home !!!

This leaves us with 119 children who still, unfortunately, have less than $100 in their grants. This number does include many children who have been recently listed - since January - and so have had little times to grow their grants.  It also includes some children who have been listed and available for adoption for what seems like forever, but have been overlooked and unseen for so very long.

I have split the list into sections - so as the children's grants grow, they can move up to the next step, until they eventually jump that $100 wall.

Sadly - there are currently 12 children with ZERO in their grants - can we change that - can we zero those zeros ??

The list is below - first, the children in purple, who have found their families !
Next - the LONG list of children in red, who have flown over that $100 wall !!
Then, the children who need the most help - those still with less than $100.
Lastly, those children who had less than $100 and are now unavailable for adoption.
